English (Sec 1/2)

As students transition to secondary school, a focus on language mastery is crucial to building core skills that are essential to cope with upper secondary demands. At the secondary level, English is about precision and depth. Students are exposed to a range of texts that vary both in content and difficulty. They are then required to analyze them in greater detail and write with clarity and relevance.

At Our Learning Lodge, we help students to better cope with these expectations by giving them a head start. Our small classes ensure students get the personalized guidance and supportive environment to ask questions and clarify any doubts.

Teaching Methodology at OLL

We aim to hone writing proficiency, content creation and logical thinking skills at the lower secondary level.

1) Practical writing and reasoning skills

Without any multiple-choice components at the secondary level, our teachers guide students to craft clear, thoughtful, complete-sentence answers. Students are exposed to varied sentence structures and content to strengthen their understanding.

2) Emphasis on interaction and communication skills

Our teachers focus on developing a clear expression of thought in students and correct usage of vocabulary and expressions. Honing these skills enables students to elaborate on questions with relevant responses, which is especially crucial for oral assessments.

3) Content-Focused Learning

Through carefully selected learning materials, our students are introduced to real-world events in bite-sized and manageable portions. They will learn the relevance of current affairs and its impacts in an engaging manner, which further aims to fuel their curiosity.

4) Engaging Learning Environment

At Our Learning Lodge, we ensure that learning connects to the students’ interests and has practical application to the real world. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions and to express their ideas and opinions freely.

Lower Sec English Tips

Writing a Personal Recount

At the lower secondary level, especially in Secondary 1, students are no longer writing from a third person’s point of view. Their personal experiences take center stage, and this shift to first-person writing can be tricky.

Here are some tips to overcome this!

1. Imagine watching your experience on the big screen!

Nobody wants to watch a boring movie. When writing a recount, focus on details that would make it exciting to read. From vivid scenery to interesting monologues, these are sure to make your story come alive, just like a cinematic movie! Don’t forget to focus on experiences that are unique to you. After all, no two movies are alike.

2. You are the star!

You are the main character of the story, so do not leave out any details! In a recount, your audience is witnessing the event unfold through your lenses - what you see, they see too! So, let the audience step into your shoes and let them feel and experience your emotions. Leave no stone unturned!
