G3 English O-Level Tuition
(Sec 3/4)

There can be several factors which can cause upper secondary English to feel challenging. One of the most immediate challenges students encounter is the increased complexity of comprehension passages. Students will realise that there are more questions that test their ability to read between the lines than there are questions where answers can be copied directly from the text. There is also a leap from simple narrative or recount compositions to essays that demand rigorous logic and real-world examples.

At our Learning Lodge, we understand that without a sound foundation and the ability to translate information from our daily life into usable and relevant content, students will struggle with upper sec English. That is why, at the upper secondary levels, our teachers have woven in real-world examples into our curriculum to help even those who do not keep up with current affairs build their content.

Teaching Methodology at OLL

We focus on pushing the limits of our students and continuously aim to ensure that their foundation of the English Language remains strong.

1) Coverage of High Frequency Essay Topics

Through analysis, our teachers have identified topics that have regularly been tested at the O’Levels to provide students with an overview. The English curriculum at Our Learning Lodge is designed to give students widespread exposure to the various question types and approaches that these topics might cover to ensure content mastery.

2) Turning real world examples into relevant content

Our teachers put a strong emphasis on teaching students how to easily turn everyday examples into relevant content. Our students learn to identify key takeaways from their daily interactions, look beyond what is presented on the surface and make clear distinctions between superficial points and meaningful content. For those with a good grasp of current affairs, our teachers will be focusing on honing critical analytical skills that aim to provide students with the confidence to assert their own stand and points of view.

3) Tailored Learning

At Our Learning Lodge, we do not adopt a one-size-fits-all approach as we understand that every student has a unique approach to learning. Our trained teachers will work together with each student to identify their current level of understanding and learning gaps so that we can best cater to their specific needs.

4) Supportive Learning Environment

Our goal is to support every student in their academic journey. We aim to create a space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes or even challenge themselves.

English Quick Tips

1) Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing is not about substituting every word in the sentence but about providing an accurate summary of the point presented. Before you start, ask yourself these questions:

  • What is the main point?

  • Am I able to explain it to myself without referring to the text?

By doing this, you can gauge your own understanding of the point at hand instead of solely focusing on just rephrasing the words.

2) Essay Writing

Purely focusing on the length of your paragraph is not going to help in clarity. Visualise it as an inverted triangle instead.
