WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
The oral examination is the first examination on the road to the PSLE. Students are tested on their ability to articulate and craft insightful opinions about the world around them within a short period.
Scoring well for the PSLE Oral Examination is the first step to acing the PSLE!
1) TECHNIQUES FOR STIMULUS-BASED CONVERSATION (SBC)
Structured and proven effective, our students are provided with three key techniques to help them navigate and breeze through the stimulus-based conversation.
- I see, I think, I wonder - This answering technique guides students through the different steps of answering the questions posed. It allows them to showcase their knowledge, opinions and points of view on the topic systematically and coherently.
- Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? - Students are taught to effectively utilise the 5W and H framework in order to recount personal experiences with ease and clarity. Coupled with an arsenal of vibrant expressions and vocabulary, students will learn the tips and tricks to being a confident and engaging storyteller.
- Point, Explanation, Elaboration, Link - Through this P.E.E.L. approach, students are taught to develop their ideas methodically. Learn to craft talking points, make links and connections and highlight key ideas all without the need for a pen and paper! This is a crucial skill to master during the oral examinations to display one’s breadth of knowledge and critical thinking skills.
2) THE FEEDBACK MODEL
At Our Learning Lodge, we believe that consistent feedback at every juncture is necessary for growth.
- Reading Aloud - Students will be individually assessed on their pronunciation, articulation, pacing, tone, voice projection, and fluency in reading.
- Stimulus-Based Conversation - Students will be individually evaluated on the ability to think on their feet and response time.
3) ACTUAL SIMULATION OF THE PSLE ENGLISH ORAL EXAMINATION
At the end of the course, students will undergo a mock oral examination.
- Separated from the entire class, students are given five minutes to prepare before they are individually called into the examination room.
- Students are required to introduce themselves before being asked to attempt the Reading Aloud and Stimulus-Based Conversation components.
- The simulation will closely mimic actual PSLE Oral Examination conditions to better prepare the students.
